This room is commonly used for counselling, life-coaching and therapy. Julien sits across the table looking calm despite his busy schedule as a meditation teacher and co-director of\u00a0<i>New Life<\/i>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The centre is near <a title=\"Chiang Rai\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chiang_Rai_(city)\">Chiang Rai<\/a>,<!--more-->a busy city in the north of Thailand.\u00a0\u00a0<i>New Life<\/i>\u00a0is a project which provides a recovery programme for people who are suffering from problems related to substance abuse and addiction, relationship issues and stress. Accommodation is available to people from all walks of life and from many different countries. There is a truly international feel to the place. Julien is from Belgium and the accountant, Rika, is Japanese.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/rika.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2351 aligncenter\" alt=\"rika\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/rika-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/rika-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/rika.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #333399\">RIKA, THE ACCOUNTANT<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000\">Julien says,\u00a0<i>There are fifty-six rooms, some of which are double.\u00a0 Two to four people can sleep in a double room<\/i>.\u00a0 Six of these rooms are double rooms and the other fifty are single.\u00a0 He explains that the centre is going to continue expanding by building smaller rooms which will be in the forest to afford more privacy to those who want it\u2026<i>for solitary meditation practice.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/div>\n<div><i>In the beginning there were mainly addiction problems<\/i>, Julien tells me,\u00a0<i>mostly drugs, secondly alcohol, sometimes maybe sex on the internet; but as we moved along, more and more people came for depression issues, burn-out issues, anxiety, anger-management issues, and now in the last month we see more and more people who are into drink or drugs\u2026they\u2019re not really addicts, they\u2019re not really depressed either, they just feel that their life isn\u2019t going anywhere.\u00a0 Maybe they\u2019re not happy anymore; maybe they\u2019re burned out, maybe not satisfied, with low self-esteem; maybe what they\u2019re doing is not working for them and they want a solution to their problems.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Julien thinks that the application of some of the Buddhist values may be able to help certain people by introducing some of the\u00a0<i>tools\u00a0<\/i>that they use to work on themselves.\u00a0 He says that in the last month more people came simply for\u00a0<i>self-improvement<\/i>.<i><\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There are nine-staff members on the team including a cook, four people \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0doing life-coaching and various auxiliary staff such as gardeners.\u00a0 Julien says,\u00a0<i>Four-people run the programme, I do more of\u00a0 the management and financial issues, construction and the gardening:\u00a0 Kruu Kade, she does more of the programme, she\u2019s a programme director; Thomas and Sabrina do life-coaching\u2026we don\u2019t really have a business plan, it just kind of grew organically.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>Julien is adamant that the process of running the centre is brought about by everybody contributing to the development of the centre,\u00a0<i>everybody has a say,\u00a0<\/i>he insists.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/KRUU-KADE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2353 aligncenter\" alt=\"KRUU KADE\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/KRUU-KADE-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/KRUU-KADE-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/KRUU-KADE.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0KRUU KADE, CO-DIRECTOR<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The Founder of the project, <a title=\"Johan Hansen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newlifethaifoundation.com\/our-team\/johan-hansen\/\">Johan Hansen<\/a>, is a businessman completely convinced that mindfulness, which he experienced in <a title=\"Thamkrabok Monastery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thamkrabok.net\/html\/body_treatment.html\">Thamkrabok Monastery<\/a>, would be a very useful healing tool and he wants to offer this to people all over the world.\u00a0\u00a0<i>He has projects all over the world so he travels most of the time<\/i>, Julien says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><i>Everyone who works here has had their part of suffering: me, I was an addict for a long time<\/i>.\u00a0 Julien mentions several other people who have come with problems.\u00a0\u00a0<i>The traditional treatment-options did not work,\u00a0<\/i>he says<i>, and we found a way out of our suffering through mindfulness practice, each in our own way. I was a monk for a long time\u2026the monastery where I lived was a working monastery\u2026just to provide fruit for the community, construction, building homes for monks, social work as well.\u00a0 I learnt through that. \u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/TOM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2354 aligncenter\" alt=\"TOM\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/TOM-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/TOM-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/TOM.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333399\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #333399\">TOM VAN DEN BEEMD, LIFE COACH<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Julien says he uses mindfulness in everything he does and that after doing different kinds of\u00a0<i>rehabs<\/i>\u00a0he found that they didn\u2019t work at all and that mindfulness had a transformational power and strength to deal with the destructive habits that had formed.\u00a0\u00a0He goes on to say that mindfulness gave him\u00a0<i>the capacity not to be clogged up in our thoughts, in our feelings, not let ourselves be like a slave by desires and our cravings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/i>He found that mindfulness was a powerful tool and that sitting meditation didn\u2019t suit everybody, that different methods like\u00a0<i>tai chi<\/i>\u00a0were more suitable for certain types of people.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The viability of the centre has to do with certain choices that have to be made.\u00a0\u00a0<i>For all the people who work here it\u2019s important to keep this programme as affordable as possible.\u00a0 In the beginning we wanted to keep it free \u2013 to give everybody a chance to come here because lots of people\u2026don\u2019t have that many resources.\u00a0 So, if you really want to keep the fee low like it is now, then you have to rely on donations and on the generosity of the people who believe in our project.\u00a0 So that\u2019s what we do now. Part of our income comes from the fees that we charge the volunteers, the guests and the residents: a part of it comes from donations.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/SABRINA.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2355 aligncenter\" alt=\"SABRINA\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/SABRINA-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/SABRINA-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/SABRINA.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #333399\"><i>\u00a0<\/i>SABRINA ZIMMERMAN, LIFE COACH<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">A large part of the centre\u2019s income goes to buy food for the people:\u00a0 but Julien hopes that there will be some development in agriculture to the extent that they will be able to feed themselves in the future and save money.\u00a0 At the moment the centre has been\u00a0<i>breaking even\u00a0<\/i>since the beginning of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>Around the centre, one can hear Julien conversing in fluent Thai, either speaking to people or on the phone.\u00a0 He says that working in the kitchen for the monks and nuns at Thamkrabok Monastery helped him to pick up the language, working with Thai women who didn\u2019t speak any English, allowing him informally to learn to read and write Thai script.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When asked where he sees himself in the future, Julien says,\u00a0<i>I love this place;\u00a0<\/i><i>I love this place\u00a0<b>so<\/b>\u00a0much.\u00a0 Every morning I wake up and I walk up here at 5.30, how do I feel? \u2013 I feel like the happiest man in the world, just to be able to walk to this foundation and work here\u2026I see people change, I see people grow.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have any other projects planned.\u00a0 I can see myself helping someone out, so I can see myself staying here.\u00a0 Right now, I\u2019m so happy here.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As a guest, I was able to observe that everyone at the centre is kind and understanding towards each other.\u00a0 There is a certain loving ambience that is quite catching.\u00a0 I leave the centre with fond memories of the staff, the green fields, the wildlife, the ecologically mindful way in which this young project has taken root over the past two-years, and especially the restful period afforded the traveller looking for a place to find security and understanding.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/MEDITATION-HALL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2356 aligncenter\" alt=\"MEDITATION HALL\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2013\/08\/22152629\/MEDITATION-HALL-300x225.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"425\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #333399\">THE MEDITATION HALL<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; \u00a0 \u00a0JULIEN GRYPE, CO-DIRECTOR OF\u00a0NEW LIFE THAILAND \u00a0We\u2019re sitting in an airy little room at the end of a row of units used as accommodation for the volunteers and residents of\u00a0New Life Thailand.
