The\u00a0three\u00adleg\u00a0train\u00a0journey\u00a0down\u00a0to\u00a0Penzance\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0quite\u00a0as\u00a0bad\u00a0as\u00a0I’d\u00a0expected;\u00a0despite\u00a0my<\/p>\n

disappointment\u00a0when\u00a0booking\u00a0at\u00a0not\u00a0being\u00a0able\u00a0to\u00a0repeat\u00a0the\u00a0trip\u00a0my\u00a0son\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0made\u00a0years\u00a0ago.\u00a0\u00a0At<\/p>\n

that\u00a0time,\u00a0we\u00a0travelled\u00a0Leeds\u00a0to\u00a0Penzance\u00a0direct\u00a0so\u00a0had\u00a0eight\u00a0hours\u00a0to\u00a0sit\u00a0back\u00a0and\u00a0enjoy\u00a0the<\/p>\n

journey.<\/p>\n

Manchester\u00a0to\u00a0Birmingham\u00a0New\u00a0Street\u00a0\u00a0on\u00a0‘Cross\u00a0Country’\u00a0trains\u00a0turned\u00a0out\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0the\u00a0most<\/p>\n

problematic.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0arrived\u00a0at\u00a0Piccadilly\u00a0Station\u00a0in\u00a0plenty\u00a0of\u00a0time\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a07.26\u00a0departure.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0train<\/p>\n

pulled\u00a0in\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0hurried\u00a0along\u00a0the\u00a0platform\u00a0looking\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0‘cycle’\u00a0logo\u00a0adjacent\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0appropriate<\/p>\n

door\u00a0in\u00a0which\u00a0to\u00a0board\u00a0what\u00a0looked\u00a0like\u00a0a\u00a0state\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0art\u00a0piece\u00a0of\u00a0rolling\u00a0stock.\u00a0\u00a0It\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0steep\u00a0haul<\/p>\n

up\u00a0into\u00a0the\u00a0carriage\u00a0where\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0confronted\u00a0by\u00a0what\u00a0I\u00a0can\u00a0only\u00a0describe\u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0small\u00a0wardrobe\u00adsized<\/p>\n

compartment\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0hook\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0ceiling;\u00a0and\u00a0this\u00a0was\u00a0supposed\u00a0to\u00a0accommodate\u00a0two\u00a0bikes?\u00a0\u00a0On\u00a0the<\/p>\n

other\u00a0side\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0corridor\u00a0was\u00a0an\u00a0even\u00a0smaller\u00a0compartment\u00a0for\u00a0one\u00a0bike.\u00a0\u00a0This\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0classic\u00a0case\u00a0of<\/p>\n

designers\u00a0not\u00a0consulting\u00a0the\u00a0appropriate\u00a0people\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0right\u00a0stage.\u00a0\u00a0Cyclists\u00a0are\u00a0constantly\u00a0provided<\/p>\n

with\u00a0facilities\u00a0that\u00a0non\u00adcyclists\u00a0think\u00a0we\u00a0should\u00a0have.\u00a0\u00a0How\u00a0often\u00a0do\u00a0Tour\u00a0de\u00a0France\u00a0racers\u00a0with<\/p>\n

stripped\u00a0down\u00a0bikes\u00a0travel\u00a0by\u00a0train?\u00a0\u00a0It’s\u00a0more\u00a0often\u00a0than\u00a0not\u00a0commuters\u00a0with\u00a0at\u00a0least\u00a0one\u00a0pannier,<\/p>\n

or\u00a0tourers\u00a0like\u00a0me\u00a0with\u00a0fully\u00a0laden\u00a0bikes.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0did\u00a0eventually\u00a0manage\u00a0to\u00a0dangle\u00a0my\u00a0bike\u00a0by\u00a0its\u00a0front<\/p>\n

wheel\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0ceiling\u00a0hook,\u00a0but\u00a0not\u00a0until\u00a0detaching\u00a0my\u00a0four\u00a0panniers\u00a0and\u00a0sundry\u00a0other\u00a0bits\u00a0of<\/p>\n

luggage\u00a0and\u00a0storing\u00a0them\u00a0elsewhere.\u00a0\u00a0Thankfully,\u00a0no\u00a0other\u00a0cyclists\u00a0boarded\u00a0the\u00a0train.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0vacated\u00a0my<\/p>\n

seat\u00a0after\u00a0Wolverhampton\u00a0and\u00a0spent\u00a0the\u00a0rest\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0journey\u00a0reloading\u00a0the\u00a0bike\u00a0ready\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0quick<\/p>\n

dash\u00a0at\u00a0New\u00a0Street.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0I\u00a0alighted\u00a0the\u00a0train\u00a0in\u00a0Birmingham\u00a0the\u00a0platform\u00a0staff\u00a0seemed\u00a0to\u00a0know\u00a0what\u00a0they\u00a0were\u00a0doing.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0was\u00a0quickly\u00a0directed\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0lifts\u00a0and\u00a0along\u00a0the\u00a0walkway\u00a0down\u00a0to\u00a0my\u00a0departure\u00a0platform.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0had<\/p>\n

about\u00a0six\u00a0minutes\u00a0between\u00a0arrival\u00a0and\u00a0departure\u00a0but,\u00a0luckily,\u00a0the\u00a0trains\u00a0seem\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0running\u00a0to\u00a0time.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0was\u00a0‘Cross\u00a0Country’\u00a0again\u00a0for\u00a0this\u00a0leg\u00a0to\u00a0Exeter\u00a0but\u00a0older\u00a0rolling\u00a0stock\u00a0this\u00a0time.\u00a0\u00a0Here\u00a0the<\/p>\n

platform\u00a0staff\u00a0proved\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0not\u00a0so\u00a0knowledgeable.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0uniformed\u00a0young\u00a0lass\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0table\u00a0tennis<\/p>\n

bat\u00a0ushered\u00a0me\u00a0along\u00a0the\u00a0train\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0‘wheelchair’\u00a0logo\u00a0and\u00a0bid\u00a0me\u00a0board\u00a0through\u00a0the\u00a0wide\u00a0door.\u00a0\u00a0The<\/p>\n

train\u00a0manager\u00a0promptly\u00a0but\u00a0politely\u00a0ordered\u00a0me\u00a0off\u00a0again\u00a0and\u00a0down\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0end\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0train\u00a0where<\/p>\n

there\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0good\u00a0old\u00adfashioned\u00a0guards\u00a0van\u00a0with\u00a0lots\u00a0of\u00a0room.\u00a0\u00a0My\u00a0bike\u00a0was\u00a0soon\u00a0secured\u00a0fully<\/p>\n

loaded\u00a0against\u00a0one\u00a0wall\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0journey\u00a0south.\u00a0\u00a0It\u00a0was\u00a0three\u00a0carriages\u00a0back\u00a0to\u00a0my\u00a0allotted\u00a0seat\u00a0at\u00a0a<\/p>\n

table\u00a0across\u00a0from\u00a0a\u00a0couple\u00a0from\u00a0Liverpool\u00a0who\u00a0were\u00a0on\u00a0their\u00a0way\u00a0to\u00a0Plymouth\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0relative’s<\/p>\n

wedding.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As\u00a0with\u00a0people\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0certain\u00a0age\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0long\u00a0train\u00a0journey,\u00a0and\u00a0especially\u00a0northerners,\u00a0life\u00a0stories\u00a0were<\/p>\n

exchanged.\u00a0\u00a0Once\u00a0they\u00a0discovered\u00a0that\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0attempting\u00a0to\u00a0raise\u00a0money\u00a0for\u00a0a\u00a0good\u00a0cause,\u00a0they<\/p>\n

promised\u00a0to\u00a0log\u00a0onto\u00a0the\u00a0Harley\u00a0Slack\u00a0fund\u00a0web\u00a0site\u00a0and\u00a0make\u00a0a\u00a0donation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Exeter\u00a0St\u00a0David’s\u00a0to\u00a0Penzance\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0painless\u00a0leg\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0journey.\u00a0\u00a0A\u00a0different\u00a0operating\u00a0company<\/p>\n

but\u00a0the\u00a0train\u00a0boasted\u00a0a\u00a0full\u00adsized\u00a0guard’s\u00a0van\u00a0too,\u00a0this\u00a0time\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0front.\u00a0\u00a0Lot’s\u00a0of\u00a0cheerful\u00a0willing<\/p>\n

staff\u00a0to\u00a0open\u00a0doors\u00a0and\u00a0help\u00a0load\u00a0bikes\u00a0made\u00a0the\u00a0switch\u00adover\u00a0effortless.\u00a0\u00a0My\u00a0bike\u00a0was\u00a0soon\u00a0secured<\/p>\n

along\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0half\u00a0dozen\u00a0others\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0spacious\u00a0compartment.\u00a0\u00a0I’m\u00a0told\u00a0that\u00a0some\u00a04000\u00a0cyclists\u00a0a<\/p>\n

year\u00a0do\u00a0the\u00a0Land’s\u00a0End\u00a0to\u00a0John\u00a0O’Groats\u00a0ride\u00a0so\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0inevitable\u00a0that\u00a0other\u00a0cyclists\u00a0would\u00a0be\u00a0on<\/p>\n

this\u00a0last\u00a0part\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0journey.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The\u00a0sun\u00a0had\u00a0been\u00a0shining\u00a0through\u00a0the\u00a0carriage\u00a0window\u00a0for\u00a0most\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0journey\u00a0down\u00a0but,\u00a0as\u00a0soon<\/p>\n

as\u00a0I\u00a0pushed\u00a0my\u00a0bike\u00a0out\u00a0onto\u00a0the\u00a0station\u00a0forecourt\u00a0at\u00a0Penzance,\u00a0it\u00a0started\u00a0to\u00a0rain.\u00a0\u00a0By\u00a0the\u00a0time\u00a0I’d<\/p>\n

cleared\u00a0the\u00a0town\u00a0and\u00a0got\u00a0out\u00a0onto\u00a0the\u00a0A30,\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0pouring\u00a0down,\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0strong\u00a0blustery\u00a0wind\u00a0from<\/p>\n

the\u00a0west\u00a0making\u00a0the\u00a0going\u00a0hard.\u00a0\u00a0Perhaps\u00a0this\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0bit\u00a0of\u00a0much\u00a0needed\u00a0exertion\u00a0after\u00a0spending\u00a0the<\/p>\n

day\u00a0sat\u00a0on\u00a0trains.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0quite\u00a0see\u00a0it\u00a0that\u00a0way\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0time\u00a0though!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I\u00a0rode\u00a0into\u00a0the\u00a0complex\u00a0and\u00a0round\u00a0past\u00a0the\u00a0rather\u00a0odd\u00a0collection\u00a0of\u00a0stalls\u00a0and\u00a0shops\u00a0which\u00a0seem\u00a0to<\/p>\n

‘litter’\u00a0the\u00a0point\u00a0itself\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0rather\u00a0grand\u00a0Land’s\u00a0End\u00a0Hotel\u00a0which\u00a0graces\u00a0the\u00a0very\u00a0tip.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0rain\u00a0was<\/p>\n

as\u00a0heavy\u00a0as\u00a0ever,\u00a0being\u00a0blown\u00a0in\u00a0horizontally\u00a0by\u00a0the\u00a0wind\u00a0off\u00a0the\u00a0sea.\u00a0\u00a0I’d\u00a0passed\u00a0the\u00a0caravan\u00a0and<\/p>\n

camping\u00a0park\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0left\u00a0back\u00a0down\u00a0the\u00a0road\u00a0and\u00a0decided\u00a0that\u00a0there\u00a0was\u00a0no\u00a0way\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0going\u00a0to<\/p>\n

pitch\u00a0my\u00a0tent\u00a0in\u00a0this\u00a0weather,\u00a0especially\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0first\u00a0night;\u00a0old\u00adage\u00a0showing\u00a0already!\u00a0\u00a0My\u00a0inquiry<\/p>\n

elicited\u00a0the\u00a0information\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0Land’s\u00a0End\u00a0Hotel\u00a0was\u00a0full.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0think\u00a0this\u00a0was\u00a0genuine\u00a0and\u00a0not\u00a0the<\/p>\n

‘anti\u00a0cyclist’\u00a0rejection\u00a0that\u00a0some\u00a0such\u00a0places\u00a0apply.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0young\u00a0woman\u00a0behind\u00a0the\u00a0reception\u00a0desk<\/p>\n

helpfully\u00a0phoned\u00a0another\u00a0hotel\u00a0in\u00a0nearby\u00a0Sennen\u00a0Cove\u00a0and\u00a0confirmed\u00a0that\u00a0they\u00a0had\u00a0room\u00a0for\u00a0me.\u00a0\u00a0I<\/p>\n

quickly\u00a0made\u00a0a\u00a0note\u00a0of\u00a0my\u00a0odometer\u00a0reading\u00a0and\u00a0zeroed\u00a0my\u00a0bike\u00a0computer\u00a0\u2013\u00a0this\u00a0was\u00a0genuinely<\/p>\n

part\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0ride\u00a0now\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and\u00a0headed\u00a0back\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0turn\u00a0off\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0Cove.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0taking\u00a0the\u00a0left\u00a0turn\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0signpost\u00a0for\u00a0Sennen\u00a0Cove\u00a0and\u00a0riding\u00a0for\u00a0about\u00a0a\u00a0hundred\u00a0yards,\u00a0I<\/p>\n

could\u00a0see\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0road\u00a0dipped\u00a0down,\u00a0what\u00a0looked\u00a0almost\u00a0vertically,\u00a0towards\u00a0the\u00a0shore.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0bike<\/p>\n

was\u00a0gathering\u00a0speed.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0had\u00a0an\u00a0immediate\u00a0mental\u00a0picture\u00a0of\u00a0trying\u00a0to\u00a0grind\u00a0my\u00a0way\u00a0with\u00a0fully\u00a0laden<\/p>\n

bike\u00a0back\u00a0up\u00a0there\u00a0straight\u00a0after\u00a0breakfast\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0morning\u00a0and,\u00a0although\u00a0it\u00a0might\u00a0well\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0taste\u00a0of<\/p>\n

what’s\u00a0to\u00a0come,\u00a0didn’t\u00a0fancy\u00a0the\u00a0prospect.\u00a0\u00a0A\u00a0quick\u00a0decision\u00a0was\u00a0called\u00a0for\u00a0and\u00a0I\u00a0made\u00a0a\u00a0U\u00a0turn<\/p>\n

before\u00a0it\u00a0got\u00a0too\u00a0steep\u00a0and\u00a0headed\u00a0back\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0A30.\u00a0\u00a0Not\u00a0far\u00a0back\u00a0along\u00a0the\u00a0road\u00a0\u2013\u00a0in\u00a0fact\u00a0only\u00a0a<\/p>\n

mile\u00a0and\u00a0half\u00a0from\u00a0LE\u00a0\u2013\u00a0was\u00a0the\u00a0Sunny\u00a0Bank\u00a0Hotel.\u00a0\u00a0I\u00a0bagged\u00a0the\u00a0last\u00a0room,\u00a0just\u00a0in\u00a0front\u00a0of\u00a0a<\/p>\n

group\u00a0of\u00a0German\u00a0riders.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0Sunny\u00a0Bank\u00a0was\u00a0really\u00a0a\u00a0B\u00a0&\u00a0B\u00a0so\u00a0no\u00a0evening\u00a0meal\u00a0was\u00a0available.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0there\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0restaurant\u00a0a\u00a0few\u00a0yards\u00a0along\u00a0the\u00a0road\u00a0but,\u00a0when\u00a0mien\u00a0host\u00a0phoned\u00a0to\u00a0book<\/p>\n

me\u00a0a\u00a0table,\u00a0it\u00a0was\u00a0full.\u00a0\u00a0He\u00a0very\u00a0kindly\u00a0offered\u00a0to\u00a0drive\u00a0me\u00a0down\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0hotel\u00a0in\u00a0Sennen\u00a0Cove\u00a0\u00a0\u00ad\u00a0the<\/p>\n

very\u00a0place\u00a0where\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0supposed\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0staying\u00a0that\u00a0night\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and\u00a0his\u00a0wife\u00a0collected\u00a0me\u00a0after\u00a0dinner.<\/p>\n

So\u00a0I\u00a0had\u00a0first\u00a0hand\u00a0experience\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0hill\u00a0I’d\u00a0eschewed\u00a0early,\u00a0but\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0modern\u00a0car,\u00a0which\u00a0had\u00a0to<\/p>\n

labour\u00a0back\u00a0up\u00a0in\u00a0first\u00a0gear.<\/p>\n

Not\u00a0exactly\u00a0as\u00a0planned\u00a0but\u00a0I\u00a0fell\u00a0asleep\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0night\u00a0of\u00a031st\u00a0July\u00a0have\u00a0reached\u00a0Land’s\u00a0End\u00a0and<\/p>\n

completed\u00a0a\u00a0mile\u00a0and\u00a0a\u00a0half\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0ride.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0journey\u00a0proper\u00a0starts\u00a0tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Ernie Buck is 66 years old and has lived in various parts of\u00a0Yorkshire for the last 30 years. A continual commuting cyclist,he has done a number of long distance solo expeditions\u00a0within the UK, but dreamt of cycling to India and beyond for years.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Having arrived in India in early 2006, Ernie continued on\u00a0around the world and made it back to Liverpool 17\/12\/2006,\u00a0across the Atlantic aboard the vessel MV Reinbek\u00a0<\/em>some 17 months after he left the UK in July 2005.<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n

In 2009 Ernie did the\u00a0Land\u2019s\u00a0End\u00a0to\u00a0John\u00a0O\u2019Groats cycle ride.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
