{"id":2901,"date":"2014-02-26T20:10:41","date_gmt":"2014-02-26T19:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/?p=2901"},"modified":"2014-02-26T20:10:41","modified_gmt":"2014-02-26T19:10:41","slug":"four-poems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/four-poems\/","title":{"rendered":"FOUR POEMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Cartography<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following the old maps, he arrived<\/p>\n<p>just where he had planned to be.<\/p>\n<p>The landscape conformed to interpretation:<\/p>\n<p>that hill, those clumps of trees, the village gathered<\/p>\n<p>around the bridge.\u00a0 He saw the things<\/p>\n<p>he&#8217;d expected to see, given the forecasts,<\/p>\n<p>the time of year: the lone fox and the raven falling.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t prepared for the motorbike<\/p>\n<p>coming screaming round where the road forked right<\/p>\n<p>in a curving descent over spreading contours<\/p>\n<p>to the valley floor. Nothing could indicate how to turn<\/p>\n<p>avoiding oblivion, the uncharted plunge,<\/p>\n<p>the way time stretched through the flick of an eye<\/p>\n<p>to a sound and a light in a circling loop;<\/p>\n<p>but he did.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9Angus D.H. Ogilvy<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>As Moon<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A long sweep passing since<\/p>\n<p>I saw the moon<\/p>\n<p>as moon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The flare of summer,<\/p>\n<p>town horizons,<\/p>\n<p>cloud-cast sky ways;<\/p>\n<p>all the moot excuses<\/p>\n<p>I assume.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I see it now<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>moon as moon<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>gravid with harvest<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>rising in the crisping<\/p>\n<p>of a fading afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9Angus D.H. Ogilvy<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em\">Love Tea<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Flavour<\/p>\n<p>intensifies<\/p>\n<p>through the second<\/p>\n<p>and the third infusions:<\/p>\n<p>don&#8217;t use boiling water; avoid<\/p>\n<p>sweeteners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9Angus D.H. Ogilvy<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Edge<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You never know where you might find your edge,<\/p>\n<p>and, spun by vertigo, flail to grasp<\/p>\n<p>the crumbling earth, snatching at sparse<\/p>\n<p>scrub wedged by twisted roots for rootless legs,<\/p>\n<p>jarring the panic wilding of the heart<\/p>\n<p>to sudden stillness.<\/p>\n<p>Then, how to move from<\/p>\n<p>that tight, cold spot, exposed, alone, remote,<\/p>\n<p>hemmed between yawning emptiness &#8211; the space<\/p>\n<p>of the possible \u2013 and the tyranny of place?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For this is the test.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t matter<\/p>\n<p>that it struck as you&#8217;d hardly begun to<\/p>\n<p>feel those slopes beneath your feet, or after<\/p>\n<p>turning from the top for the long descent;<\/p>\n<p>it&#8217;s how you will open, what your intent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9Angus D.H. H. Ogilvy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Angus was born in Glasgow, grew up in Galloway, and was educated in Edinburgh and Dundee. He has had a career in education which included 25 years as an international school teacher and administrator in Spain, China, Nepal, Indonesia and Zimbabwe. Since winning his school poetry prize in his youth, he has had an abiding interest in poetry and his poems have appeared in various publications.\u00a0 He returned to Edinburgh in 2008 and spends his time writing, doing voluntary work, and addressing conferences, seminars and symposiums about the patient experience of cancer using his poetry as an aid to communication.
