Being India, when things fall apart events happen with an unstoppable velocity. \u00a0Bodies were found on trains arriving mostly in the northern states; \u00a0houses were burned with terrified Sikhs locked inside; others were hacked to death on the streets of Delhi.<\/h3>\nIn the south where I was, the responses were much more sedate and tempered with understanding that a more educated population is capable of; and I saw Sikhs walking freely in \u00a0the nearest towns of Kolhapur and Belgaum in Karnataka State.<\/h3>\nLater, I did visit Indira Gandhi’s residence where she was murdered at\u00a0No. 1 Safdarjung Road<\/a>\u00a0in New Delhi and saw the exact spot where two paths crossed \u00a0and where \u00a0she was walking on her way to be interviewed by Peter Ustinov for a television documentary. \u00a0There was a feeling of unreality in seeing this lonely little path and I found it difficult to relate its peaceful ambiance to the violent and bloody event of her death and the events that followed.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Where was I?<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/h3>\nPanhala\u00a0<\/a>is a large hill station in Maharashtra State and there are beautiful trees and natural rolling hills outlying the central huddle of homes and shops. Around the town is a wall and under\u00a0Shivaji Maharaj<\/a>, in the seventeenth century, it became the largest walled hill fort in India.<\/h3>\n<\/a>Panhala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/h3>\nMuslims and Hindus \u00a0live peaceably side by side, and generally, all \u00a0get on well together. \u00a0Indira’s murder literally brought them closer together on the main thoroughfare through the town.<\/h3>\nIn 1984 there was only one black and white television and the owner had placed it outside his shop on a raised wooden boardwalk. \u00a0Around the television on the dusty roadside stood hundreds of townsfolk watching aghast as events unfolded. \u00a0There were looks of consternation as the facts became clear: Indira was assassinated by two-Sikh bodyguards who had killed her in retaliation for\u00a0Operation Blue Star<\/a>, the Indian Army’s attack on the\u00a0Golden Temple<\/a>\u00a0in Amritsar, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. \u00a0The Temple had become the main centre of operations for an uprising by\u00a0Bhindranwale\u00a0<\/a>and armed followers who wanted a cessation from Indian governance over the Punjab.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/a>Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n <\/p>\n

Panhala\u00a0<\/a>is a large hill station in Maharashtra State and there are beautiful trees and natural rolling hills outlying the central huddle of homes and shops. Around the town is a wall and under\u00a0Shivaji Maharaj<\/a>, in the seventeenth century, it became the largest walled hill fort in India.<\/h3>\n<\/a>Panhala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/h3>\nMuslims and Hindus \u00a0live peaceably side by side, and generally, all \u00a0get on well together. \u00a0Indira’s murder literally brought them closer together on the main thoroughfare through the town.<\/h3>\nIn 1984 there was only one black and white television and the owner had placed it outside his shop on a raised wooden boardwalk. \u00a0Around the television on the dusty roadside stood hundreds of townsfolk watching aghast as events unfolded. \u00a0There were looks of consternation as the facts became clear: Indira was assassinated by two-Sikh bodyguards who had killed her in retaliation for\u00a0Operation Blue Star<\/a>, the Indian Army’s attack on the\u00a0Golden Temple<\/a>\u00a0in Amritsar, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. \u00a0The Temple had become the main centre of operations for an uprising by\u00a0Bhindranwale\u00a0<\/a>and armed followers who wanted a cessation from Indian governance over the Punjab.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/a>Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n <\/p>\n
<\/h3>\nNo doubt, they were a nasty lot, torturing dissenters and accumulating weapons while fortifying the temple against attack by the Indian army.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\nFollowing the assassination, more that 3,000 Sikhs were murdered. \u00a0This seemed inevitable at the time. Being India, when things fall apart events happen with an unstoppable velocity. \u00a0Bodies were found on trains arriving mostly in the northern states; \u00a0houses were burned with terrified Sikhs locked inside; others were hacked to death on the streets of Delhi.<\/h3>\nIn the south where I was, the responses were much more sedate and tempered with understanding that a more educated population is capable of; and I saw Sikhs walking freely in \u00a0the nearest towns of Kolhapur and Belgaum in Karnataka State.<\/h3>\nLater, I did visit Indira Gandhi’s residence where she was murdered at\u00a0No. 1 Safdarjung Road<\/a>\u00a0in New Delhi and saw the exact spot where two paths crossed \u00a0and where \u00a0she was walking on her way to be interviewed by Peter Ustinov for a television documentary. \u00a0There was a feeling of unreality in seeing this lonely little path and I found it difficult to relate its peaceful ambiance to the violent and bloody event of her death and the events that followed.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/a><\/h3>\nMuslims and Hindus \u00a0live peaceably side by side, and generally, all \u00a0get on well together. \u00a0Indira’s murder literally brought them closer together on the main thoroughfare through the town.<\/h3>\nIn 1984 there was only one black and white television and the owner had placed it outside his shop on a raised wooden boardwalk. \u00a0Around the television on the dusty roadside stood hundreds of townsfolk watching aghast as events unfolded. \u00a0There were looks of consternation as the facts became clear: Indira was assassinated by two-Sikh bodyguards who had killed her in retaliation for\u00a0Operation Blue Star<\/a>, the Indian Army’s attack on the\u00a0Golden Temple<\/a>\u00a0in Amritsar, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. \u00a0The Temple had become the main centre of operations for an uprising by\u00a0Bhindranwale\u00a0<\/a>and armed followers who wanted a cessation from Indian governance over the Punjab.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/a>Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n <\/p>\n
<\/h3>\nNo doubt, they were a nasty lot, torturing dissenters and accumulating weapons while fortifying the temple against attack by the Indian army.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\nFollowing the assassination, more that 3,000 Sikhs were murdered. \u00a0This seemed inevitable at the time. Being India, when things fall apart events happen with an unstoppable velocity. \u00a0Bodies were found on trains arriving mostly in the northern states; \u00a0houses were burned with terrified Sikhs locked inside; others were hacked to death on the streets of Delhi.<\/h3>\nIn the south where I was, the responses were much more sedate and tempered with understanding that a more educated population is capable of; and I saw Sikhs walking freely in \u00a0the nearest towns of Kolhapur and Belgaum in Karnataka State.<\/h3>\nLater, I did visit Indira Gandhi’s residence where she was murdered at\u00a0No. 1 Safdarjung Road<\/a>\u00a0in New Delhi and saw the exact spot where two paths crossed \u00a0and where \u00a0she was walking on her way to be interviewed by Peter Ustinov for a television documentary. \u00a0There was a feeling of unreality in seeing this lonely little path and I found it difficult to relate its peaceful ambiance to the violent and bloody event of her death and the events that followed.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

In 1984 there was only one black and white television and the owner had placed it outside his shop on a raised wooden boardwalk. \u00a0Around the television on the dusty roadside stood hundreds of townsfolk watching aghast as events unfolded. \u00a0There were looks of consternation as the facts became clear: Indira was assassinated by two-Sikh bodyguards who had killed her in retaliation for\u00a0Operation Blue Star<\/a>, the Indian Army’s attack on the\u00a0Golden Temple<\/a>\u00a0in Amritsar, the holiest shrine of the Sikh religion. \u00a0The Temple had become the main centre of operations for an uprising by\u00a0Bhindranwale\u00a0<\/a>and armed followers who wanted a cessation from Indian governance over the Punjab.<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/a>Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n <\/p>\n
<\/h3>\nNo doubt, they were a nasty lot, torturing dissenters and accumulating weapons while fortifying the temple against attack by the Indian army.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\nFollowing the assassination, more that 3,000 Sikhs were murdered. \u00a0This seemed inevitable at the time. Being India, when things fall apart events happen with an unstoppable velocity. \u00a0Bodies were found on trains arriving mostly in the northern states; \u00a0houses were burned with terrified Sikhs locked inside; others were hacked to death on the streets of Delhi.<\/h3>\nIn the south where I was, the responses were much more sedate and tempered with understanding that a more educated population is capable of; and I saw Sikhs walking freely in \u00a0the nearest towns of Kolhapur and Belgaum in Karnataka State.<\/h3>\nLater, I did visit Indira Gandhi’s residence where she was murdered at\u00a0No. 1 Safdarjung Road<\/a>\u00a0in New Delhi and saw the exact spot where two paths crossed \u00a0and where \u00a0she was walking on her way to be interviewed by Peter Ustinov for a television documentary. \u00a0There was a feeling of unreality in seeing this lonely little path and I found it difficult to relate its peaceful ambiance to the violent and bloody event of her death and the events that followed.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/h3>\nNo doubt, they were a nasty lot, torturing dissenters and accumulating weapons while fortifying the temple against attack by the Indian army.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\nFollowing the assassination, more that 3,000 Sikhs were murdered. \u00a0This seemed inevitable at the time. Being India, when things fall apart events happen with an unstoppable velocity. \u00a0Bodies were found on trains arriving mostly in the northern states; \u00a0houses were burned with terrified Sikhs locked inside; others were hacked to death on the streets of Delhi.<\/h3>\nIn the south where I was, the responses were much more sedate and tempered with understanding that a more educated population is capable of; and I saw Sikhs walking freely in \u00a0the nearest towns of Kolhapur and Belgaum in Karnataka State.<\/h3>\nLater, I did visit Indira Gandhi’s residence where she was murdered at\u00a0No. 1 Safdarjung Road<\/a>\u00a0in New Delhi and saw the exact spot where two paths crossed \u00a0and where \u00a0she was walking on her way to be interviewed by Peter Ustinov for a television documentary. \u00a0There was a feeling of unreality in seeing this lonely little path and I found it difficult to relate its peaceful ambiance to the violent and bloody event of her death and the events that followed.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

<\/h3>\nFollowing the assassination, more that 3,000 Sikhs were murdered. \u00a0This seemed inevitable at the time. Being India, when things fall apart events happen with an unstoppable velocity. \u00a0Bodies were found on trains arriving mostly in the northern states; \u00a0houses were burned with terrified Sikhs locked inside; others were hacked to death on the streets of Delhi.<\/h3>\nIn the south where I was, the responses were much more sedate and tempered with understanding that a more educated population is capable of; and I saw Sikhs walking freely in \u00a0the nearest towns of Kolhapur and Belgaum in Karnataka State.<\/h3>\nLater, I did visit Indira Gandhi’s residence where she was murdered at\u00a0No. 1 Safdarjung Road<\/a>\u00a0in New Delhi and saw the exact spot where two paths crossed \u00a0and where \u00a0she was walking on her way to be interviewed by Peter Ustinov for a television documentary. \u00a0There was a feeling of unreality in seeing this lonely little path and I found it difficult to relate its peaceful ambiance to the violent and bloody event of her death and the events that followed.<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
