We\u00a0are attending Ringu Tulku&#8217;s summer camp and people from many different countries\u00a0have arrived to listen to the teachings on\u00a0<em>Mahamudra &#8211; The Moonlight\u00a0<\/em>by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal.<\/p>\n<p>On the bench beside me is Tanya: \u00a0born in Croatia, having been brought\u00a0up in Bosnia before moving \u00a0to Serbia, she speaks to me in perfect English and in a pleasing Eastern European\u00a0accent,\u00a0<em>I like to say I&#8217;m from\u00a0<\/em><i>Yugoslavia<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><em>I met Ringu Tulku Rinpoche in Boulder, Colorado<\/em>\u00a0<em>where I lived for about eight-years or so. \u00a0I met him in 1998. \u00a0<\/em>Tanya was there with her husband who wanted to study at Naropa University. \u00a0Not being interested in Buddhism at that time, although she was interested in studying dharma while he studied, Tanya worked as a nurse in a hospital. \u00a0However, she\u00a0did meet some of the senior students of <a title=\"Chogyam Tulku Rinpoche\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shambhala.org\/teachers\/chogyam-trungpa.php\">Chogyam\u00a0Trungpa\u00a0Rinpoche<\/a>\u00a0while she was in Boulder, but because of her lack of English at that time, \u00a0her understanding of Buddhism was limited.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->This is where\u00a0she met Ringu Tulku Rinpoche during one of his annual teachings at Naropa University. \u00a0About taking refuge, Tanya remarked,\u00a0<em>I took refuge, actually, not with Ringu Tulku Rinpoche, with with one of the senior students of Chogyam Rinpoche in 2000.<\/em> \u00a0Tanya continued her work as a nurse at the weekends while undertaking study\u00a0at the University.<\/p>\n<p>Since leaving the US eight-years ago, Tanya hasn&#8217;t worked as a nurse, but during that time did a three and a half-year retreat with Rinpoche in Sikkim. \u00a0<i>The schedule was very strict and we tried to follow as much as we were able to with a little modification that was done by Ringu Tulku and H H Karmapa. \u00a0There was a little less\u00a0<\/i><em><a title=\"yidam\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rigpawiki.org\/index.php?title=Yidam\">yidam\u00a0<\/a>practice and a little more Mahamudra and the\u00a0<a title=\"six yogas of Naropa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Six_Yogas_of_Naropa\">six yogas of Naropa<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>During this time, Tanya didn&#8217;t leave the retreat. \u00a0<em>I was lucky not to have to leave for a visa or for health reasons like some other people. \u00a0<\/em>Although seventeen-retreatants began, only eight finished. \u00a0At the end of her retreat,\u00a0Tanya says<em>,\u00a0I was ready to leave. \u00a0I thought it was OK to finish at that time. \u00a0I was happy to see my family. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For some time after leaving the retreat, Tanya felt like going back and doing another retreat. \u00a0She recalled,\u00a0<em>After the first year which was very difficult, the\u00a0second\u00a0and third years were just, more or less, pure joy.\u00a0\u00a0Not having to worry about anything but your practice, at some point, becomes really joyful and beautiful. \u00a0So yes, of course, after that you meet the outside\u00a0world\u00a0which is a little harsh, anyway,\u00a0you want to go back. \u00a0But\u00a0that&#8217;s\u00a0not the way for everybody &#8211; maybe for some people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>About events that were taking place outside of the retreat, Tanya says,\u00a0<em>We knew that in 2008 there was the election in USA, so Rinpoche kept us informed. \u00a0A few other things like that. \u00a0Because I think he knew this was the first traditional Three-Year Kagyu Retreat for western students in India, and so far, the only one,, I think Rinpoche got a little advice also from H H Karmapa on how to handle this retreat, not to be cut off from everything. \u00a0So he\u00a0kept\u00a0us informed a little bit, allowing a few letters here and there. \u00a0Normally, these things are not happening in a three-year retreat. \u00a0but I think he was very\u00a0skilful\u00a0in making things possible for us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>About where her life was coming from and where it was going, Tanya says,\u00a0<em>We didn&#8217;t meditate on it. \u00a0I don&#8217;t understand karma in that way. \u00a0For me, I understand karma in a more immediate way, like what is happening now. \u00a0That&#8217;s karma for me. \u00a0<\/em>Tanya couldn&#8217;t see much connection with the past and what was happening now and also in the future. \u00a0<em>I don&#8217;t know. \u00a0It&#8217;s just\u00a0immediate\u00a0in a way. \u00a0It&#8217;s a little bit of\u00a0both\u00a0<\/em>[seeing plans for the future or just taking things as they come]. \u00a0<i>Of course, I have preferences and wishes, all of that, but also at the same\u00a0time I try to see what is possible,\u00a0which\u00a0door opens, in a\u00a0way. \u00a0Next week I&#8217;m moving back the the US because it&#8217;s been some time since I wanted that and it came in a formal invitation from a friend. \u00a0She made it possible so I will \u00a0go and see what happens there.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152557\/tanya.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3263\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152557\/tanya-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"tanya\" width=\"349\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152557\/tanya-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152557\/tanya-650x487.jpg 650w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152557\/tanya.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #800000\">Tanya in happy mode<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">About the future, Tanya&#8217;s expectations have taken on \u00a0a philosophical disposition. \u00a0<em>I have lots of expectations about things: \u00a0being\u00a0positive\u00a0or negative or cynical, it doesn&#8217;t affect the course of my life much any more\u00a0because all of these things&#8230;sometimes it&#8217;s this one, sometimes it&#8217;s that one. \u00a0It changes all the time, but I try to remember that however\u00a0it may\u00a0appear, it&#8217;s actually the same in nature. I think that is the\u00a0main course of my life,l with my actions, with my practice. \u00a0I really do as much as I understand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Can you measure happiness? \u00a0Definitely! \u00a0Not only measure, I can experience it too. \u00a0I&#8217;m as happy as much as I can be. \u00a0Not always&#8230;yes, I think I&#8217;m OK, fulfilled and happy. \u00a0Rinpoche emanates that all the time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the conversation turns to compassion in the context of Tanya&#8217;s experience as a nurse, she considers carefully and states,\u00a0<em>I really don&#8217;t know if I&#8217;m compassionate or not. \u00a0Certainly, I can be sad about the\u00a0suffering\u00a0of beings, myself included, and everybody else. \u00a0Certainly, I can recognise the need for help, as a professional, but also as a human being. \u00a0I can recognise that. \u00a0Whether that is real\u00a0compassion\u00a0or not, honestly, I&#8217;m not sure.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As our conversation ends, a gentle silence\u00a0falls and the birds singing outside of the walls of the monastery take on a poignant immediacy. \u00a0We are back in the present again. \u00a0People walk singly and in groups around the square courtyard and there is an ambient atmosphere of tranquility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152600\/tanya-wangcho-and-jenga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3246\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152600\/tanya-wangcho-and-jenga-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"tanya, wangcho and jenga\" width=\"245\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152600\/tanya-wangcho-and-jenga-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152600\/tanya-wangcho-and-jenga-487x650.jpg 487w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152600\/tanya-wangcho-and-jenga.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #800000\"><em>Tanya, Lama Shenga and Ani Wangmo at the summer camp\u00a0in Portugal.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #800000\"><em>Tatjana\u00a0Popovic-Thuret\u00a0has been following\u00a0Ringu\u00a0Tulku\u00a0Rinpoche\u00a0since 1999.
