{"id":3314,"date":"2014-08-14T10:26:31","date_gmt":"2014-08-14T09:26:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/?p=3314"},"modified":"2014-08-16T09:34:04","modified_gmt":"2014-08-16T08:34:04","slug":"conversation-minna-stenroos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/conversation-minna-stenroos\/","title":{"rendered":"CONVERSATION WITH MINNA STENROOS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Meena-and-son.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3320\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Meena-and-son-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Meena and son\" width=\"344\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Meena-and-son-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Meena-and-son-650x487.jpg 650w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Meena-and-son.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 344px) 100vw, 344px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong><em>Meena with her son<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"align-center\" dir=\"\" style=\"color: #2b2b2b\"><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #800000\"><b>Many of our readers will know Minna from her work on Ringu Tulku Rinpoche&#8217;s teachings on the\u00a0<\/b><\/span><i><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #800000\"><b>The Way of the Bodhisattva<\/b><\/span><\/i><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #800000\"><b>\u00a0(<\/b><\/span><i><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #800000\"><b>Bodhicharyavatar<\/b><\/span><\/i><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #800000\"><b>a) by\u00a0<\/b><\/span><a style=\"color: #166cc5\" title=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shantideva\" href=\"Shantideva\"><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #800000\"><b>Shantideva<\/b><\/span><\/a><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #800000\"><b>, the eighth century Buddhist monk and scholar.<\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">We are sitting on the bus taking us from the Bodhicharya Summer Camp in Casa da Torre to Braga in northern Portugal. \u00a0All around us is chatter and laughter and the sound of children having a wonderful time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #000000\">Minna\u00a0says that in her home town in Helsinki, Finland, there is a<a style=\"color: #166cc5\" title=\"Bodhicharya Finland\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bodhistudy.blogspot.co.uk\/\"><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0Bodhicharya Study Group<\/span><\/a>\u00a0which has been running for about 6-years. \u00a0There is also a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #166cc5\" title=\"Palpung Finland\" href=\"http:\/\/www.palpungfinland.org\/\"><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #000000\">Palpung\u00a0<\/span><\/a>Centre to which Rinpoche attends when he is invited. \u00a0Besides these, there is a\u00a0<a style=\"color: #166cc5\" title=\"Samya Dzong Finland\" href=\"http:\/\/samye.fi\/\"><span class=\"colour\" style=\"color: #000000\">Samye Dzong\u00a0<\/span><\/a>and a Nyingma Centre. \u00a0In the Study Group, there are only five-people,\u00a0<i>but maybe this is because there are also so many other Buddhist activities in the city<\/i>\u200b, she tells me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2b2b2b\">When the conversation turns to Ringu Tulku Rinpoche, Minna says,\u00a0<i>There was a time in my life when everything was quite sorted out and everything was going nicely and I had moved from another town to Helsinki. My son was about seven-years old and he went to his first class in school and we had a nice place to live and I had nice work. \u00a0Everything was there.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2b2b2b\">What was it that brought a change to her life?<!--more--><\/p>\n<div dir=\"\" style=\"color: #2b2b2b\"><i>I had a dream where I met a person, some young man. \u00a0Although I didn&#8217;t know who he was, I felt that I knew him and I was very happy in that dream. \u00a0I was sorry because I knew it was only going to be a very brief\u00a0meeting\u00a0and before I woke up, I heard a voice in the air saying &#8220;Karmapa, Karmapa, Karmapa&#8221;. \u00a0And when I woke up, I thought, &#8220;This is something!\u00a0\u00a0This is really amazing! \u00a0What is Karmapa?&#8221; \u00a0I really didn&#8217;t know. \u00a0Then I googled and read about him. \u00a0I saw a film made by a Finnish director. \u00a0It was a documentary about two Karmapas. \u00a0I don&#8217;t remember the name of the film but that&#8217;s how I found out about this whole Karmapa situation. \u00a0When I saw the two Karmapas, I immediately knew which one it was. \u00a0That was my dream.<\/i><\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #2b2b2b\">Ten-years ago, when HH Karmapa was 19-years old, Meena had some knowledge about Buddhism, but it was mainly academic. \u00a0She started to read more and more books about the subject, including Sagyal Rinpoche&#8217;s\u00a0<i>The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying\u00a0<\/i>and her interest in the subject increased. \u00a0She then became familiar with meditation techniques, especially \u00a0<i><a style=\"color: #166cc5\" title=\"Tonglen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shambhala.org\/teachers\/pema\/tonglen1.php\">tonglen<\/a>. \u00a0<\/i>At this stage, Meena felt she had to find a Buddhist teacher and found out that two-Tibetan teachers were visiting Finland, one of them having a connection with the \u00a0Karmapa &#8211; Ringu Tulku Rinpoche who was vising the country for the first time. \u00a0<i>I found the Bodhicharya\u00a0website\u00a0and found a lot of information that was very important for me. \u00a0I saw photos and\u00a0pictures of people and\u00a0years later, when I eventually met them, I felt that I had known them.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2b2b2b\"><i>As far as my family and friends were\u00a0concerned, they had no objection about my interest in Buddhism. \u00a0The meeting with Ringu Rinpoche was quite a big thing for me. \u00a0I took refuge immediately when he came and I started\u00a0meditating\u00a0much more, being inspired and enthusiastic. \u00a0<\/i>But \u00a0another two-years passed \u00a0before Meena met him again.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2b2b2b\">With Karmapa&#8217;s promotion of vegetarianism, I wondered if Meena had been influenced by his cause &#8211;\u00a0to impact a change in\u00a0the diet of Buddhists. \u00a0<i>I used to be a vegetarian for a few years after Karmapa asked everyone to make some kind of commitment towards changing. \u00a0I raised my hand when he gave the option of being vegetarian for some time and I decided I&#8217;d do three-years, \u00a0so I lifted my hand. \u00a0Then I got an eye problem and it was recommended I eat some fish with fatty acids. \u00a0 So now I&#8217;m not vegetarian. \u00a0Also, when my family cook\u00a0I sometimes eat meat.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2b2b2b\">With so much fighting in the world today, it&#8217;s difficult to ignore what&#8217;s going on and not have an opinion about the causes of conflict. Minna has her own take on this. \u00a0<i>I&#8217;m\u00a0convinced\u00a0wars are caused by our mind&#8217;s\u00a0negative emotions and our not understanding them; not understanding our responsibility which is the same as our freedom, actually. \u00a0We don&#8217;t understand it because nobody told us and we didn&#8217;t try. \u00a0Sometimes\u00a0I wonder where the bad people are because in my daily life I rarely meet\u00a0anybody cruel; I rarely meet\u00a0anybody who is fighting\u00a0with others;\u00a0I have hardly met\u00a0anybody killing\u00a0or hating another. \u00a0But actually, we all have that capacity. \u00a0I think that\u00a0meditation, of course, gives me space and mindfulness and awareness to notice it at the very early stage, so it doesn&#8217;t grow too big and confused. \u00a0It can also lead to uprooting the cause of conflict.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #2b2b2b\">\u200bAs the bus draws nearer to Braga, Meena comments on the feeling of removal, of distance, the people have regarding politicians:\u00a0<i>One of the reasons there is war is because the people are not how we see the politicians. \u00a0 There is war and injustice because we create images of other people, including politicians \u00a0We keep and hold on to those images that we have instead of just meeting the actual people &#8211; who are just like us. \u00a0We do so, perhaps, because we think it makes life simpler: \u00a0but actually, it makes it possible for us to objectify others and see them as something less, or more than a normal human being &#8211; just like myself. \u00a0That&#8217;s also how we get our own identity.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Francois-Henrard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-3334\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Francois-Henrard-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Francois Henrard\" width=\"246\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Francois-Henrard-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Francois-Henrard-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/08\/22152554\/Francois-Henrard.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 246px) 100vw, 246px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong><em>Photo by Francois Henrard<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><em>Minna is a student of Ringu Tulku since 2004.
