style=\"text-align: center\">she goes back in<br \/>\nfor the hat from her mother-<br \/>\nmakes the lifeboat<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">the pills in her pocket<br \/>\neventually identifying<br \/>\nthe lost Irishwoman<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">anchor, propeller<br \/>\nside-scuttle\u2026<br \/>\nthese rusticles<br \/>\na hundred years<br \/>\nin the #000000\">Sunday, Women Drying Their Hair<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #404040\"><strong><span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">Bare-legged, in light, pale clothing,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">three young women stand on an urban rooftop;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">New York, probably, or some other big city.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">They are letting the wind dry their hair<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">while white garments sway on a line behind them,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">and the chimney beside them casts a long shadow.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">It is 1912, and Sloan\u2019s subjects could be sisters:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">one redhead in a green skirt, one brunette, one blonde.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">The brunette looks approvingly at the redhead,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">while the blonde brushes her hair which hangs<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">like a curtain, her head titled to the right,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">the left hand on her hip for balance.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">I imagine they are chatting about the night before;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">what they did, who they saw dancing, girl talk.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">One of them could be softly humming<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\"><em style=\"font-weight: inherit\">After The Ball<\/em>\u00a0or something jazzy;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">no World War to bother them yet, and no Depression,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">this year forever marked by a ship called the Titanic.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">This is how I would like my three sisters to be;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">close, relaxed, hanging out happily,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">the brunette smiling at the redhead, the blonde<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">still long-haired and carefree, and me,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">the youngest girl, looking on<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">from the gallery, taking it all in.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: inherit;color: #000000\"><i>Sunday, Women Drying Their Hair<\/i>\u00a0is style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Heartwood<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>West African proverb:\u2019When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Book by book, a library burns down<br \/>\nwhen someone dies in Africa; the fire<br \/>\nconsumes the memory, the sensorium.<\/p>\n<p>And when he lights his robes of orange-brown,<br \/>\nthe monk rejects the\u00a0<em>puja<\/em>, picks the pyre<br \/>\nas, book by book, his library burns down.<\/p>\n<p>Three hundred people in a Midwest town<br \/>\nwere burnt alive like blossoms on a briar,<br \/>\nwith loss of all those memories,sensoriums.<\/p>\n<p>Before he left,prognosis barely known,<br \/>\nmy father trudged his way through the quagmire;<br \/>\nthen, book by book, his library burned down.<\/p>\n<p>The seeds of our dejectedness were sown<br \/>\nwhen that disease took hold and made a liar<br \/>\nof her clouding memory, her sensorium.<\/p>\n<p>And when at last I\u2019m put into the ground,<br \/>\nor else cremated, ashes back to Gaia,<br \/>\nbook by book, my library will burn down,<br \/>\nconsuming, then, my memory, my sensorium.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heartwood<\/em>\u00a0is
