A Cure for Insomnia<\/h2>\n

Everyone should have a garden in the mind
\nthat they can tend when sleep evades them
\nand the slow hours stick in the night.
\nYou have only to close your eyes to see,
\nwaiting for you, a green lawn, daisy-flecked;
\na corner where pink clover sends its scent to the bees.
\nYou can stand gazing, sit or lie and feast and hear
\na robin sing and seeking further,
\nin silent movement, you\u2019ll part the leaves above,
\nand sight the instrument
\nto wonder at such volume from this tiny throat.<\/p>\n

You are not sleeping yet? Enter the tool shed,
\nrest there in peace and dream
\nof seeds unplanted. Take your spade,
\nsurvey and choose a plot then turn the soil,
\nhearing the iron delve at each firm thrust.
\nFall into the rhythm of your breath,
\nwatch the brown earth form, into a fertile square
\nbeneath your hand and dream that the land lies fallow.<\/p>\n

I decided to be a writer at the age of eleven.\u00a0 Life intervened and although I kept writing and had poems published in for instance, <\/em>Chapman and <\/em>New Writing Scotland, it was not until last year that I published my first novel, a detective story called \u2018<\/em>Ivory<\/a>\u2019 and was commissioned to write a play about the history of Brodick castle for the <\/em>National Trust for Scotland.\u00a0 This year NTS commissioned another play to commemorate WW1 on Arran and this was performed very successfully at the Community Theatre, Lamlash.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I live in Whiting Bay, am married to the painter Nicky Gill<\/a>. We have 2 children and 4 grandchildren.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
