{"id":3864,"date":"2015-04-30T08:43:37","date_gmt":"2015-04-30T07:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/?p=3864"},"modified":"2015-04-30T09:01:27","modified_gmt":"2015-04-30T08:01:27","slug":"approaching-the-middle-of-a-wood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/approaching-the-middle-of-a-wood\/","title":{"rendered":"Approaching the middle of a wood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is something unnerving about approaching the middle of a book \u2013 when you are writing it that is. \u00a0A bit like approaching the middle of a dark wood, partly because you are not sure if you have reached the middle and partly because you don\u2019t know what you might find there.<\/p>\n<p>Will your heroine be carried off by a predatory wolf, fall into a bottomless lake or just lie down on the beechnuts beneath her and refuse to move?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Writers who plan out their books before writing them perhaps do not have this potential obstacle although I suspect sometimes it must creep up on them unawares: the characters just baulking at doing what the writer originally imagined. \u00a0Sometimes a minor character muscles in and demands a piece of the action and sometimes a major character fizzles down like a firework going out or decides to go to Australia. \u00a0I tend to let them go.<\/p>\n<p>Approaching the middle of a book the writer has to become a proficient juggler, knowing when to put a character down (not like the cat at the vet\u2019s) and leave a strand which will be picked up later but then there are so many of them you have to be careful not to drop a ball so to speak.<\/p>\n<p>It is surprising how often what appears at first like a banal fact in a bit of description can turn out to be the basis of a clue. E.g. the tea dregs in that cup could not have been left by Mrs X because we know from chapter two that she only drinks coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Even when you get through the darkest middle of the wood of your story, it does not get any simpler. \u00a0There is always \u00a0danger in a clear path \u2013 you my may concentration and find you\u2019ve left some poor character high and dry on page 55. \u00a0It seems to me it would be quite easy to do this but I can\u2019t think of any instance where it has happened in a printed book. \u00a0As a self-publisher, I\u2019m going to keep a special lookout for them. \u00a0I wonder. Perhaps these lost characters are the reason for those sudden extra murders you get in the second half of a crime thriller. \u00a0I always thought they were there to liven things up but perhaps the writers are just getting rid of dead wood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/10\/22152542\/cicely.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3607\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2014\/10\/22152542\/cicely.jpg\" alt=\"cicely\" width=\"192\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><em>I decided to be a writer at the age of eleven.\u00a0 Life intervened and although I kept writing and had poems published in for instance, <\/em>Chapman<em> and <\/em>New Writing Scotland<em>, it was not until last year that I published my first novel, a detective story called \u2018<\/em><a style=\"color: #800000\" title=\"Cicely\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cicely.co.uk\/\">Ivory<\/a><em>\u2019 and was commissioned to write a play about the history of Brodick Castle for the <\/em>National Trust for Scotland<em>.\u00a0 This year NTS commissioned another play to commemorate WW1 on Arran and this was performed very successfully at the Community Theatre, Lamlash.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\"><em>I live in Whiting Bay, am married to the painter <a style=\"color: #800000\" title=\"Nicky Gill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arranopenstudios.com\/artists\/nicky-gill\/\">Nicky Gill<\/a>.
