Apparently, they were formed at some point during the first billion years of the earth&#8217;s existence. Looking a bit like off-white sponges, if you stare long enough you can see the odd bubble of oxygen emitted rising to the surface of the water.\u00a0 This is the beginning of the process of photosynthesis.<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"separator\">After a geological stretch of time, the cynobacteria proliferated and produced CO2.\u00a0 I put my finger in the water and tasted it.\u00a0 It was so salty I could still taste its salinity hours later.<\/h2>\n<h2>Some of the stromatolites were rather flat and shapeless while others were like large cauliflowers.\u00a0 (The word <i>stromatolites comes from the Greek for <\/i>matress.)<\/h2>\n<h2>There they are, growing in the water as they must have been 2.5 billion years ago when they had become sticky and captured the dust and sand to form a &#8216;rock&#8217; that was alive with bacteria.<\/h2>\n<h2>The only animal we saw was a black swan sitting in the middle of the lake<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/11\/22152509\/black-swan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4176\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2015\/11\/22152509\/black-swan-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"black swan\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"separator\">A man and woman did come along to see the stromatolites and I said to the him, &#8220;Say hello to your uncle!&#8221;\u00a0 He just smiled.<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"separator\">(I&#8217;d be interested to hear about the Buddhist perspective on evolution.)<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p><a
