Buddha at Kamakura<\/span><\/h2>\n

O YE who tread the Narrow Way
\nBy Tophet-flare to Judgement Day
\nBe gentle when “the heather” pray
\nTo Buddha at Kamakura!<\/h2>\n

To him the Way, the Law, apart.
\nWhom Maya held beneath her heart,
\nAnanda’s Lord, the Bodhisat,
\nThe Buddha of Kamakura.<\/h3>\n

For though he neither burns nor sees,
\nNor hears ye thank you Deities,
\nYe have not sinned with such as these,
\nHis children at Kamakura.<\/h3>\n

Yet spare us still the Western joke
\nWhen joss-sticks turn to scented smoke
\nThe little sins of little folk
\nThat worship at Kamakura-<\/h3>\n

The grey-robed, gay-sashed butterflies
\nThat flit beneath the Master’s eyes,
\nHe is below the Mysteries
\nBut loves them at Kamakura.<\/h3>\n

And whoso will from Pride released,
\nContemning neither creed nor priest,
\nMay feel the Soul of all the East
\nAbout him at Kamakura.<\/h3>\n

Yea, every tale Ananda heard,
\nof birth as fish or beast or bird,
\nWhile yet in lives the Master stirred,
\nThe warm wind brings Kamakura.<\/h3>\n

Till drowsy eyelids seem to see
\nA-flower ‘neath her golden\u00a0htee
\n<\/em>The Shwe-Dagon flare easterly
\nFrom Burmah to Kamakura<\/h3>\n

And down the loaded air there comes
\nThe thunder of Thibetan drums
\nand droned – “Om mane padme hums<\/em>” –
\nA world-width from Kamakura.<\/h3>\n

Yest Brahmans rule Benares still,
\nBuddh-Gaya’s ruins pit the hill,
\nAnd beef-fed zealots threaten ill
\nTo Buddha and Kamakura<\/h3>\n

A tourist-show, a legend tolde,
\nA rusting bulk of bronze and gold,
\nSo much, and scarce so much, ye holde
\nThe meaning of Kamakura?<\/h3>\n

But when the morning prayer is prayed,
\nThink, ere ye pass to strife and trade,
\nIs God in human image made
\nNo nearer than Kamakura?<\/h3>\n
