{"id":4477,"date":"2016-04-04T15:02:53","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T14:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/?p=4477"},"modified":"2016-04-13T13:40:18","modified_gmt":"2016-04-13T12:40:18","slug":"renewable-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bodhicharya.org\/manyroads\/renewable-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Renewable Energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4478\" src=\"https:\/\/d2wipdjmobk1g8.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/04\/22152433\/wind-turbines.jpg\" alt=\"wind turbines\" width=\"315\" height=\"233\" \/><\/p>\n<header>\n<h2 class=\"field field-type-text field-label-hidden tile-field-title\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">The plan to build a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point in Devon, in the light of the recent developments of power sources in the world, seems to be an anomaly. \u00a0While many countries in Europe are turning to renewable energy in order to cut emissions, the UK seems to be determined\u00a0to build this reactor while the rest of the world, with only a few exceptions, sees the decline\u00a0of this energy source.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">According to an article by Robert Kunzig, a respected scientific journalist, in a recent article in the <em>National Geographic:<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\"><em>Germany has invested heavily in energy generated by offshore wind and expects one-third of its future wind energy to come from offshore farms&#8230;After the disaster in Fukushima,\u00a0Japan, in 2011, Germany vowed to quickly abandon nuclear energy. \u00a0of 17 operable reactors, nine have since been shut down. \u00a0The rest are set to close by 2022.<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">Yet \u00a0in the UK going ahead with plans to enlist France and China to build a new reactor in the South West of the UK.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">The arguments against this initiative are too numerous to mention but can be found in the pages of the\u00a0<em><a style=\"color: #000080\" href=\"http:\/\/stophinkley.org\/EngRevuIndex.htm\">Stop Hinkley<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>pages.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000080\">In a recent visit to Holy Island, I got talking with Dr Martin Hird who is looking into the viability of building wind turbines\u00a0to\u00a0supply energy for the\u00a0small community who live there. We discussed some of his ideas about this project.<br \/>\n[Ed]<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2>Renewable energy means something which we can do and never have to stop doing.\u00a0 So it doesn\u2019t use up a finite resource of any kind. An example is wind energy.\u00a0 The turbine blades won\u2019t last forever so they have to be replaced.\u00a0 The towers will last for a huge amount of time and they can be recycled.\u00a0 There is no cut-off point when we have to stop using them.<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<h2>Coal doesn\u2019t have a future. \u00a0Every year Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/pdf\/assessment-report\/ar5\/syr\/AR5_SYR_FINAL_SPM.pdf\">IPCC<\/a>) \u00a0publish a summary of the climate science that\u2019s going on around the world.\u00a0 They produced a report\u00a0last year and a summary of last\u00a0year (2015) which you can get on the web. \u00a0It&#8217;s about 30 pages long and contains\u00a0a recommendation for policy makers on planet change.\u00a0 We must stop emitting carbon dioxide by the end of the century if we hope to keep the increase to less than 2 degrees c.\u00a0 Even at 2 degrees c we just have to stop.\u00a0 What we\u2019ve done already is catastrophic for the planet.\u00a0 The scientists have a high level of confidence, up to 95% confidence, that the effects caused by carbon dioxide emissions is harmful.<\/h2>\n<h2>Producing animals to eat is a colossal use of greenhouse gases so being vegetarian is a very good contribution to reduce gases.\u00a0 But whether it\u2019s actually viable to continue some form of animal husbandry for people to eat meat is doubtful&#8230;the very big difference from a Buddhist viewpoint or going by dharma is that we have to understand that we\u2019re a part of everything and we behave as if we\u2019re not; that the earth is just some kind of storehouse that we can plunder until our heart\u2019s content and it will be fine, and that\u2019s obviously not the case.\u00a0 We\u2019re part of the whole thing and we need to behave in recognition of that.\u00a0 There is no independent arising and we behave as if there is and all the dharma teaching points out that that\u2019s not the case although\u00a0still we behave as if it is.<\/h2>\n<h2>In the short term, there are people who say that nuclear energy is the only possible way to go because of what\u2019s going to happen in the world because of the climate change already. \u00a0For instance, there were studies published this year in the <em>New Scientist<\/em> (June\/July 2015) saying that 5 meters of sea-level rise is now certain because of the melting of the glaciers in Antarctica which are in a runaway condition now: and also the effect of heating on Greenland glaciers.\u00a0 So 5 meter sea-level rise without all the other changes is going to devastate a lot of low-lying land.\u00a0 And that\u2019s only one aspect, the sea-level rise \u2013 the devastation that\u2019s going to caused &#8211; is\u00a0huge.\u00a0 The only thing we can do in the long term is to reduce our consumption to reduce pollution.\u00a0 The real problem is over-consumption and the apparent need\u00a0to consume more and more and more.\u00a0 While we continue to do that, there is really no hope, to be honest.<\/h2>\n<h2>What the environmentalists say is that there is no chance of that happening \u2013 reducing the consumption of energy \u2013 of people changing their behaviour.\u00a0 The amount of energy we require is so big, the only way to provide that amount of energy is through nuclear power; and that\u2019s probably true because there just isn\u2019t the will to install alternative sources of energy.<\/h2>\n<h2>Wind energy as well as wave energy has the potential to provide everything we need in the UK. \u00a0The potential for wave energy in the north Atlantic is absolutely colossal. But the amount of money which is put into research to make that viable is a dribble.\u00a0 It seems like the seriousness of the situation and the response to it are not yet matched.\u00a0 The\u00a0lack of\u00a0will\u00a0of the people responsible to do what really has to be done by\u00a0taking on board just how serious the situation is not evident.\u00a0 That\u2019s how it seems to me.\u00a0 Personally I\u2019m strongly opposed to nuclear because of the waste.\u00a0 You can create an even longer-term problem by using nuclear.\u00a0 Nuclear fusion, if someone could figure out how to do it is an alternative possibility. \u00a0There\u2019s a lot of research going into fusion at the moment, it has the huge benefit of producing no radioactive waste.\u00a0 That would be a massive benefit.\u00a0 It still requires a source of fuel.\u00a0 The material used to produce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccfe.ac.uk\/introduction.aspx\">fusion <\/a>is readily available on the planet [tritium produced for lithium?].<\/h2>\n<h2>The EU is very proactive in this area. \u00a0 European countries, especially Germany, has a strong green party who are getting things implemented much more quickly than here.\u00a0 The UK seems to be\u00a0always behind in these things.<\/h2>\n<h2>There\u2019s a lot of research going on in the UK as well.\u00a0 Up until recently the implementation has been going on quite well till this present government came into power.\u00a0 Denmark also is a world leader in wind energy and has a huge proportion of its needs produced by this method but they\u2019re supported by the Scandinavian grids.\u00a0 The states has a big potential. \u00a0I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s really happening there yet.\u00a0 I\u2019m not involved in research in that area. [See\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/climate-change\/special-issue\/\">National Geographic the Climate Issue<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>for information on world climate change.]<\/h2>\n<h2>I\u2019m involved in the energy project on Holy Island which is very small.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to put in a small wind energy project, less than a hundred kilowatts anyway, sixty to ninety kilowatts, that sort of region.\u00a0 The planning permission is in for that so I&#8217;m hoping to get that built this year.\u00a0 I\u2019ve also been working on a system at the men\u2019s retreat centre in Arran.\u00a0 For quite a few years it was stuck on a land ownership issue.\u00a0 I\u2019m also hoping to get that built this year.\u00a0 These are the two main voluntary things I\u2019m doing.\u00a0 I also do consultancy work in Glasgow.\u00a0 Most of their work in recent times has been wind farms.<\/h2>\n<h2>One of the biggest problems today is caused by gas emissions.\u00a0 Pollution is also a problem but carbon dioxide, methane and the other greenhouse gases are the biggest problem.\u00a0 Those come from burning fossil fuels, coal, gas.<\/h2>\n<h2>When you read what the scientists say it\u2019s very bleak to be honest, it really is.\u00a0 You have to be aware of what they\u2019re saying.\u00a0 The the tropical sea will be too warm for coral by 2050. \u00a0In thirty years time. \u00a0there may be no more coral in the world.\u00a0 It\u2019s staggering.\u00a0 The oceans are more acidic than they have been for a millennium now and the rate of change in becoming is increasing.\u00a0 So the shellfish which\u00a0take the calcium out of the sea to make their shells will be unable to\u00a0do that. \u00a0When you read about it all it\u2019s not very happy reading and it\u2019s only really a question of when. \u00a0What we do from now will determine just how bad it\u2019s going to be and how quickly or slowly these changes come about.
