faraway land, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>There reigned a wise sovereign <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Most mighty and valiant, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Honored by many as the <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>World\u2019s Bounty and Mercy.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Upon hearing the Dharma<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of Lokeshvararaja Buddha, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>He melted into joyful repose<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And cast aside desire\u2019s shadow,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The fetters of the world\u2019s cares,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And vowed to become the heir<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of the True and Utmost Way!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Thus, he abandoned his crown,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Robed himself a humble monk,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And marched forth upon the Way,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Cultivating through night and day<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Until he became the renowned <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Bodhisattva Dharmakara. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With profound wisdom peerless,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Faith and patience matchless,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>He swiftly mastered the Dharma, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rose far beyond the Samsara<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And high above the snares of Mara.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In triumph, he sought the Buddha<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And piously vowed and bowed before<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Him, revering his great grandeur:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Buddha\u2019s august demeanor <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Is wondrous without compare,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>His halo the ten quarters illume,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Bright beyond the luminous moon<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And the lucent beams of high noon,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The World Honored One\u2019s voice<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Enlightens all beings to rejoice<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Within the Dharma in native speech,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And he appears to all and each <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In the body of their honored liege. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I yearn to emulate you and preach <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Sermons of Dharma to everyone,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Without bounds like the shining sun, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To teach Sila, Samadhi and Viriya, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The profound and potent Dharma.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Wisdom as vast and deep as the sea,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Heart neither stained nor weary, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gliding o\u2019er oceans of sin and woe,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To the halcyon shores of Bodhi,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Untainted by gloomy wrath,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Unfettered by lustful avarice,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And blessed with serene Samadhi.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I shall follow the footsteps of the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Infinite Buddhas who precede me<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And act as a great guiding light <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>For the masses, to be their sight,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Uprooting the temporal bequeath<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of birth, old age, illness and death,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Always generous and ever virtuous,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With diligence and eternal patience,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Forever within Samadhi and Prajna, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Faithfully abiding by the Six Paramitas, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Bestowing Bodhi upon the dull and lost,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And lifting Sages into the Buddha host!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As he who rains alms upon the Sangha <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Is less than he who becomes a Buddha<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Through single-minded faith,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I vow to in diligent Samadhi stay,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And glow brightly with everlasting light,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I shall build a splendrous paradise<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Unrivaled across the universe entire,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To serve as a refuge of lasting respite<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>For those benighted in the Samsara!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With kindness I will shatter every klesha <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of every poor soul tortured by dukkha. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I shall not waver for I am determined<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To shoulder every pain and burden, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>So let the Buddha be my witness!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After hearing Dharmakara\u2019s great<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And dauntless resolve and praise,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The Buddha arose from his Dais, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gleaming with utmost admiration <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>For the one before him who is salvation<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To the endless many lost in perdition.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>He then declared:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYour vows are not made in vain,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>For even the oceans can be emptied<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>By but one who bails unceasingly,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And all its hidden pearls revealed,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>What is there the sincere cannot attain?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I will show you the path and Way<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>To your glorious and imperious day!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And so the Buddha parted the sky and <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Revealed to Dharmakara every plane<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of rebirth, each and every Buddha Land,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>All the galaxies, worlds and Sagely domains,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Revealing their cities, peaks, gorges and seas,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Their prairies, hills and fertile valleys, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The villas of devas dancing in divine weal,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The nature and condition of their peoples,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Unveiling their barren ghostly ruins, animal<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Kingdoms and bleak narakas most infernal. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Uncovering all of their vices and virtues,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>So that Dharmakara may with ease build<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A pure and gilded land of wondrous bliss,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Free from evil and woe, a supreme harbor <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of every good found across the ten quarters.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The Buddha then said: \u201cPronounce your vows!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cFor the relief of all sentient beings,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Including those mired in the suffering<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of hellish, ghostly and beastly rebirth,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I have built a Pure Land of true mirth,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Open to all who are willing to share my<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Merits and forfeit darkness for light!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I have paved for you fine gilded roads <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of precious stones, purple and gold,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>For you I have filled rivers and lakes<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With cool azure waters of soft ripples,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Swirling with fragrant flowers most graceful,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With beds of aurulent sand, and laid<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Before you villas, pavilions and canopies,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Groves of beryl, emerald and agate trees<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>That ruffle and sway in the blissful breeze,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Adorned by jade leaves and scented petals,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Berries of Mani-jewels and crystal.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I give you clear skies and peerless paradise,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A glorious afterlife of endless delight,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With singing songbirds perched on amber arbors,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Humming hymns with lyrical harmony<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And the most soothing of melodies!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I bless all who arrive in my land with<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>August, aurulent and ethereal bodies <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Untainted by the greed, fear and foul odors<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>That flesh, desire and delusion harbors,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I bless thee with all the powers of Bodhi,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Its wisdom, eminence, bliss and glory,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Its serene Samadhi and tranquil purity!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Divine provision shall appear on demand<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And so too the finery and robes of my land.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Any being who chants my Buddha-name,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Wholeheartedly abandons evil and repents<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With faithful resolve, shall enter my domain<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And rise to Sagehood upon the Lotus Lagoon. <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I am Amitabha and my vows have come to pass!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Upon hearing Amitabha\u2019s august vows,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The entire assembly before him bowed,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Moved to joyous tears by his great resolve!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>They beheld his unsurpassed compassion,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>His merciful uprooting of all evil passions,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Granting each the chance to taste the Samadhi<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Of the highest, most true and utmost Bodhi!<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On this glorious and regal Dharma day,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The Earth shook in the six auspicious ways,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gleaming gods and goddesses were seen<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gliding over the stars stroking harp-strings,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The ethereal heavens soon resounded with <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gilded notes of splendid divine bliss,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And the courts of the heavenly lords feted, <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Raining down golden lilies like confetti!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Poem released into Public Domain<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"background: white;margin: 0cm 0cm 19.2pt 0cm\"><em><span style=\"color: #800000\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">I started translating Chinese Mahayana Pure Land Buddhist sutras in 2014 after realizing that many important \u00a0sutras and scriptures that I had long taken for granted were mostly unavailable in the West. What had begun as a project for a short tractate turned into a delightful three year odyssey of translations, essays, poems, discussions \u00a0and correspondence with new friends. All of my<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a style=\"color: #800000\" href=\"https:\/\/purelandsutras.wordpress.com\/translations\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">posts, articles, translations, poems and essays<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, serif\">are free and in the Public Domain, and I encourage other authors to donate their works into the Public Domain as well.
