EATING BAMBOO-SHOOTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

My new Province is a land of bamboo-groves:<\/p>\n

Their shoots in spring fill the valleys and hills.<\/p>\n

The mountain woodman cuts an armful of them<\/p>\n

And brings them down to sell at the early market.<\/p>\n

Things are cheap in proportion as they are common;<\/p>\n

For two farthings, I buy a whole bundle.<\/p>\n

I put the shoots in a great earthen pot<\/p>\n

And heat them up along with boiling rice.<\/p>\n

The purple nodules broken,\u2014like an old brocade;<\/p>\n

The white skin opened,\u2014like new pearls.<\/p>\n

Now every day I eat them recklessly;<\/p>\n

For a long time I have not touched meat.<\/p>\n

All the time I was living at Lo-yang<\/p>\n

They could not give me enough to suit my taste,<\/p>\n

Now I can have as many shoots as I please;<\/p>\n

For each breath of the south-wind makes a new bamboo!<\/p>\n

BEING VISITED BY A FRIEND DURING ILLNESS<\/h4>\n

I have been ill so long that I do not count the days;
\nAt the southern window, evening\u2014and again evening.

\nThe winter sparrows morning and evening sing.
\nBy an effort I rise and lean heavily on my bed;
\nTottering I step towards the door of the courtyard.
\nBy chance I meet a friend who is coming to see me;
\nJust as if I had gone specially to meet him.
\nThey took my couch and placed it in the setting sun;
\nThey spread my rug and I leaned on the balcony-pillar.
\nTranquil talk was better than any medicine;
