An old charcoal-seller
\n<\/span>Cutting wood and burning charcoal in the forests of the\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Southern Mountain.
\n<\/span>His face, stained with dust and ashes, has turned to the
\ncolour of smoke.
\n<\/span>The hair on his temples is streaked with gray: his ten fingers are black.
\n<\/span>The money he gets by selling charcoal, how far does it go?
\n<\/span>It is just enough to clothe his limbs and put food in his
\nmouth.
\n<\/span>Although, alas, the coat on his back is a coat without lining.
\n<\/span>He hopes for the coming of cold weather, to send up the
\nprice of coal!
\n<\/span>Last night, outside the city,\u2014a whole foot of snow;
\n<\/span>At dawn he drives the charcoal wagon along the frozen ruts.
\n<\/span>Oxen,\u2014weary; man,\u2014hungry: the sun, already high;
\n<\/span>Outside the Gate, to the south of the Market, at last they stop
\nin the mud.
\n<\/span>Suddenly, a pair of prancing horsemen. Who can it be
\ncoming?
\n<\/span>A public official in a yellow coat and a boy in a white shirt.
\n<\/span>In their hands they hold a written warrant: on their tongues
\n\u2014the words of an order;
\n<\/span>They turn back the wagon and curse the oxen, leading them
\noff to the north.
\n<\/span>A whole wagon of charcoal,
\n<\/span>More than a thousand pieces!
\n<\/span>If officials choose to take it away, the woodman may not
\ncomplain.
\n<\/span>Half a piece of red silk and a single yard of damask,
\n<\/span>The Courtiers have tied to the oxen\u2019s collar, as the price
\n<\/span>of a wagon of coal!<\/span><\/h4>\n
