Sir Nicholas Winton died in July 2015 at the age of 106. He was dubbed the “British Schindler”, having helped rescue \u00a0<\/b>669 Czechoslovakian children, most of them Jewish, from an impending invasion by Germany and preventing their murder by the Nazis. This involved fulfilling the legal requirements for their entry to the UK and finding families who were willing to take them in and look after them.\u00a0 \u00a0The harrowing story is now the subject of a film, One Life, <\/em>starring\u00a0 Anthony Hopkins and Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Flynn.\u00a0 His role in this humanitarian effort to save the children remained unknown for nearly 50 years until 1988 when he was invited by the BBC to appear in the progamme That’s Life.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>As well as being knighted by Elizabeth II he was also awarded the highest honour of the Czech Republic, the Order of the White Lion (1st class) by Czech President Milos Zeman.

Maeve O’Sullivan was on the list of course leaders for the New Year at the Irish Writers Centre<\/a>.\u00a0 Maeve is a Dublin-based poet and hajiin and has published five collections of long and short-form poetry with Alba<\/a>.\u00a0 The haiku in this selection is inspired by Maeve’s first visit to Holy Island off the coast of Arran in Scotland.
