A SUMMARY
by Maggy Jones
The sources of our suffering is our reactions to experiences this causes us to harm others who naturally retaliate. These emotions are called “mind poisons” or kleshas *. Ambition – wanting, wanting – can be positive e.g. wanting happiness for all beings, but most of our desires are only for ourselves. Anger is like fire it burns anything but can be harnessed. This group of three – anger, greed and ignorance are the root of all trouble. They must be transformed.
There are basically 3 types of dharma people. 1st I want a better life, more joy; worldly dharma 2nd Those who realise that a better life does not give total satisfaction – something else is needed. 3rd But more still is needed; I want my near ones to be happy and also all beings. To achieve these you must work on these kleshas – your practice is you. You may have a right to be angry but what does the anger do to you? Anger and compassion come from the same root; the anger provides the fuel to e.g. correct an injustice but make sure that your anger does not control you. You must be able to let go. What to do? 1st Let go. Remember impermanence – wait and they will pass. 2nd Transform the emotion. Recognise the provocation then focus on something positive e.g. Chenrezig even chocolate! 3rd Understanding that every emotion is part of your own consciousness, like waves on the ocean. You need understanding, mindfulness and application – that is true dharma practice. Q & A
