A SUMMARY
by Maggy Jones
People usually think of “daily practice” being daily prayers; that is good but the main practice is integrating the dharma into your daily life. Some may have a small booklet of prayers which they refer to. If you receive an empowerment you may be asked to do a daily recitation as a commitment. Some think if you break this commitment you also break samaya. This is not quite correct; samaya has more to do with your conduct *.
Be clear about what practice is. Why do we say this, recite that? Without understanding the recitation is meaningless. Anything that transforms you is practice, dealing with kleshas ** (mind poisons) and developing compassion and wisdom. Our habits are strong so this will be hard. Start your day with a positive attitude, for yourself and the benefit of all beings. Calm your mind; be relaxed and natural, use meditation, yoga and similar exercises. If your practice makes you feel stressed – something is wrong. Worldly support is necessary but this can be bring benefit to others also. Start the day with refuge and bodhicitta and end it with a dedication – the rest is your real practice. Q & A
