On invitation of the Bodhicharya Buddhist Group Sussex Rinpoche gave an evening talk on the Four Noble Truths.

This is the first teaching of Gautama Buddha after his enlightenment.

First he taught

  1. There is suffering
  2. There is causes of suffering
  3. There is cessation of suffering
  4. There is the path to the cessation of suffering

Second he taught

  1. There is suffering – it has to be understood
  2. There is causes of suffering – which has to be got rid of
  3. There is cessation of suffering – which should be achieved
  4. There is the path to the cessation of suffering – which must be practiced

Third he taught

  1. There is suffering – it has to be understood – but there is nothing to understand
  2. There is causes of suffering – which has to be cleared – but there is nothing to clear
  3. There is cessation of suffering – which should be achieved – there is nothing to attain
  4. There is the path to the cessation of suffering – which must be practiced – there is nothing to practice
