A wonderful, heart-opening teaching on love, kindness and compassion, that everybody should hear and let it simmer in their heart. This talk was given at Bodhicharya Kent in Rochester, UK.
Intro
In the West, there is always the question of lacking self love and -compassion. That question does not arise in the East, where loving oneself is taken for granted. There is no special sutra or a teaching on that, but it is implicitly there in the very foundation.
Taking refuge, in fact, is a way of loving oneself. It comes from the thought: how should I find a way to free myself from suffering, pain and problems now and in the long run and to find lasting happiness and peace. It’s very important that we care for ourselves and do something to benefit ourselves, and only this will then become the foundation for benefiting others. Only based on my own wish not to have pain and suffering I am able to know that other people also wish the same.
