Rinpoche first gives an introduction to meditation in general and why we should practice it. Then he talks in more detail on shamatha and vipashyana, the two aspects of meditation in Buddhism.
From the event description by Karma Tashi Ling:
“Shamata in Sanskrit, shiné in Tibetan, means calm-abiding or tranquility. Vipasyana in Sanskrit, lhaktong in Tibetan, means ‘clear seeing’ or ‘insight’. Shamata and vipasyana are two main aspects of meditation on the Buddhist path.
Practicing shamata stabilizes the mind and makes it clear and attentive but does not remove ignorance and misconceptions. The combination of shamata and vipasyana leads to liberation—insight into the true nature of the mind and all phenomena.”
