At Palpung Ireland Rinpoche was asked to give a talk about dealing with emotions.

The prophesy at Buddha’s birth – that he would either be a great king or a great spiritual leader. Dispute between Buddha and his cousin Devadatta which led Buddha to consider the nature of suffering – that all beings must endure birth, old-age, sickness and death, without escape. He left home, became a monk, and studied with many great teachers, but this was not enough. He went into the forest, lived in extreme asceticism and deep meditation, and became enlightened.
His first teaching was the Four Noble Truth – that all problems arise from our negative emotions, the five mind poisons (Kleshas) * Rinpoche elaborates. We must try not to be controlled by these emotions; work to be free of them. It is not necessary to be angry – look at alternatives for dealing with trouble. Look at the issue – not the person then you deal with compassion. Remember, all the emotions are impermanent – the anger will pass. Transform this energy. Try to keep your mind focussed on something good. Find the wisdom of seeing things how they really are. The method for all is Mindfulness ** being aware of what is going on when it is happening.
