Madhyamika - 17 – Verses 127 – 144

17th Lecture: III – Refutation of the Belief in Auto-genesis

Verses 127 – 144

Naropa Institute, Boulder, Colorado

Summary

Refutation of the Belief in Autogenesis. (a) Refutation of primal substance. (b) Refutation of self-production: the main argument: the Samkhya philosophy of “prakriti”, which is eternal and the three “gunas” – pain, pleasure and neutrality. The “unborn nature”. Something cannot be both independent and caused by something else. Self-evidence of interdependence in both cause and result. Intellectual understanding precedes experiential understanding of prajna-paramita and Madhyamika.

Q & A.: The “potential” in objects and people. Study or practice. Prakriti. The three levels of understanding and nature of wisdom. Origins of “mantras”.
